on the previous thread, on 11/7 I reported a problem that was corrected...

after 12 days of everything working fine (even this morning), as of now, I am back to the same problem...

i'll just cut/paste, since it is the same problem:

-------------------------------------------------------------------

as of today, when I am on any page, no longer is there information at the top - the buttons for "forums", "listings", reviews" and even my own link to my inbox are no longer there... I haven't figured out a workaround for that last one, so, I can't check my inbox... there are workarounds for the others, but it was easier before when the buttons were there......

----------------------------------------------------------------

I can't even view the listings, let alone my own inbox for replies...

but since no one else has reported the same problem, I don't know what to think...

maybe it will correct itself again by tomorrow morning...

There is a small grey box with 3 horizontal lines inside it near the top right area of most if not all pages on NS. Click on it and it  brings up all the info you're looking for on the left side of the page. If I was smart enough to do a screen shot I'd show you that way.

At least that's how it works on my IPad and phone

well, ok - if you think this is an improvement...

yes, when I left click on that box in the upper right hand corner, all the seven or so tabs come up on the left side of the screen, one under the next...

of course, they extend down for more than half the page and everything on the top half of the page to the right of the seven tabs is blanked out and the whiteness covers up the first part of the posts ON the page, so you just see the bottom half of the page with the top half whited out...

when you hit "reply" (as I am doing now), the tabs all go away and you see the usual post that you re replying to (in this case, yours) just as always but honestly, this doesn't seem like any improvement - if there is some reason why you want the tabs to show up vertically instead of horizontally, well, that is what you now have, but thanks for the info on the box in the upper right hand corner...

The big advantage is that the tabs are only there when you want them. It may not seem much of a feature if you're on a desktop or laptop, but it frees up space on mobile devices, which is the target audience for most of the upgrades.

Thanks for continuing the beta test thread! I think the crew are still dealing with current site issues.

"well, ok - if you think this is an improvement"

It is an improvement for those who use mobile devices to access NS. As Stainless pointed out this update was primarily for those devices.

"when you hit "reply" (as I am doing now), the tabs all go away and you see the usual post that you re replying to (in this case, yours) just as always but honestly, this doesn't seem like any improvement - if there is some reason why you want the tabs to show up vertically instead of horizontally, well, that is what you now have, but thanks for the info on the box in the upper right hand corner..."

The tabs do not go away, they just go off the screen. When I'm on my IPad I just pull down the screen with my finger and they are right there. But when you hit reply they are off the screen.

You're welcome.

So is the site mobile only?  Will people have a choice?

It is a lot harder to read the new site on a desktop.  I am also visual and guide mostly by the pictures.  The cropping and format on the pictures is so different.  BP looks fine mobile.  Definitely agree that NS should be more mobile friendly though.  Hopefully they don't have to drop the old format to do that.

forgive me for being tech illiterate, but I just don't HAVE a new set of brain cells to store all this 21st century information, which will probably be irrelevant anyway in ten years... and the information already occupying my few still functioning brain cells seems more "timeless" and important than the newest "hey look - dancing cats?"...

as such, I don't own a smart phone and likely never will (a tracphone works for my limited purposes) and I do not use any social media (what a huge waste of time - can anyone say when social media changed their lives dramatically for the better - and describe just how that happened?)...

but I know that all these sites and devices are gathering, sorting and storing your information...

as an example, I get "hotels tonight" in my inbox... if I click on one particular hotel to see details, the next e-mail I get from "hotels tonight" will have that hotel highlighted on the first page (since "it" knows that I previously showed interest in that hotel)...

based non that, shouldn't ns be able to determine if I am accessing the site via mobile (which I never do) or pc (which I only do) and place in front of me the setup most appropriate to the communication device I am using?

or, when you go to ns, shouldn't the first thing you see (on the sign-in page?) ask, "are you using a pc or mobile device?" and place the appropriate format in front of me?...

because the alternative, which we appear to have, is, "more people are using mobile than a pc, so, everyone has to use the format most mobile-friendly"...

I thought the 21st century would be better than that...

Hi all,

We want to make the site a great experience for both PC and mobile!

Yes we can detect what device you are using and show you the best view possible.  This will be the plan based on your feedback and requests.

We just launched some bug fixes and larger images for the listing gallery. Please check them out (via the beta link or going to www.nightshift.co/search) and provide your feedback.

Thx

What I don't like about the new listings format is that the ad opens in a pop-up instead of either on a new tab or on the "next" page. Working with pop-ups often gives me problems on my phone. I often want to open several ads and compare. Now I have to click on her handle (link to her profile) and, after opening in new tab, go to her listings tab and open the ads that way. This requires several more clicks for each ad that I want to open.

And if I click on the link at the bottom of the pop-up that says "Go to listing and read reviews" then her listing opens up and I've lost my place on the listings when I go back anyway. I thought the whole purpose of the pop-up was so we don't lose our place?

Also, sometimes the filter shows up on the left. Sometimes it doesn't. Often the new format opens up with no filter applied and I have to fill it out again and again.

Otherwise the layout looks good. I like the way the pics display in the pop-up.

Very good observations, Cunny. Pop-ups are a problem on phones - they don't always scale properly and links from them act all kinds of different ways. I hadn't tried nearly as hard as you, to test them. I'm still annoyed that the "saved" searches load, but need another click or two to run. And the filters are so buggy that beta isn't really usable, so it's hard to stick with the experience when you can't use the results.

Also - phone numbers in pop ups aren't clickable links. It takes at least two more clicks to get to a working phone link. I think the listing should be one click from the search page - ditch pop ups entirely. They cause more problems than they solve. What problems do they solve, anyway? Why pop ups in the first place?

Hi all,

We have fixed the issue with the Saved Searches.  It should be a lot better.

We have also added a new layout for the popups which should work better on mobile.  Can you guys confirm?

Stainless, what do you mean phone number link?  Do you 'Message Me Now!' button?  We still need to fix that.

By "phone number link", I mean the phone number right above the "message me now" button. In NS Classic, tapping that number gets you the choice to call or cancel. In New Coke, it's dumb text. You need extra steps to get to the provider listing, and hence phone, reviews, all the good stuff.

An actual listing is better than a pop up in every way except image size. Embiggen images in listings, and there is no reason for pop ups.

Also: headline formatting is lost in both Classic and New Coke, but in different ways. The headline on a new format search result looks like the provider wants it. Classic listing headlines are all caps; New Coke headlines are all lower case.

I'd love to hear the case for pop ups.

Finally, filter results are as buggy as they were 3 weeks ago. Gaps and outliers in Classic, and so many more in New tthat it's not useful except as a sandbox.

Hi Stainless,

Thanks for the clarification on Phone numbers.  We will look into it and get back to you on that.

For headlines, what would you recommend seeing?

Our thoughts on Pop Ups is that it allows you to keep your spot from your previous search,  scroll through Listings faster and it keeps you from having to open a new tab.  With that said, if you and other hobbyists don't mind going directly to the Listing or creating a new tab with the Listing, I'm open to the idea and it can easily be implemented.  Open to hearing your thoughts and other member's feedback on this.

We are still working on the filters.  Most of the issue is caused by geolocation and our need to fix Listings where providers have multiple locations set in their Listings.  For new listings this error has been eliminated but, we are still trying to figure out the best way to update old listings on the backend.  If you are still seeing gaps between search results for classic and new coke, please PM me your filter settings and what you're expecting to see so we can diagnose further.

Thanks for your feedback!

Headlines in new layout search results look right (I'd like a provider to weigh in to be sure). All caps is passable; all lower case looks wrong.

The problem with pop ups is that they do so much less than listings. That's cool if you're browsing and moving on, but if you want to dig deeper only a proper listing will do. Opening another tab is fine *except* a) the first tab needs to go back to where it was when closing the pop up, and b) in Private mode, a tab that's been neglected long enough to repaint will often sign out, which is a large pain.

I'll update  on filters via PM, but honestly things haven't changed much since my PM of November 8.

Hi,

Please check the classic coke Listing show page.  We have integrated the popup design for the photos since people seem to like it very much and corrected the heading styling issues the community was seeing.  The main pages have all been scrubbed through but, there may be some secondary pages that look funny.  Please report if you see anything off and let me know if you as a community like the new design?!

We are looking into how to make it so you can go to a listing page directly and still save your spot in the search results.  Will report back.

Thanks for the PM for listing search issues.  Looking into it now.

Best,

The new look just showed up on my laptop today, unfortunately. And when I open the box with all the headings that used to be up top,
nothing at all shows up when I click the gear (which used to show my profile as of yesterday)

Secondly, when I try to view listings, the provider pics are HUGE & overbearing!

I re-booted & got the normal layout back on my laptop. I think that I was getting the smartphone layout for some unknown reason!

Heading style issues are unchanged on my iPhone. They look right in beta search results, all lower case in beta listings, all caps in classic listings.

Photo display looks great and page width is fixed.

images on ads are now full size?  some are just way too big (larger than 1200 pixels in height)  I'd suggest an 800 pixel height limit.  I like bigger pics by default, but depending on the size sometimes too big I have to scroll way down...

Not a fan of the new listing layout. Photos are oversized and many cellpics etc cannot stand up to the larger size. They get grainy and don't fit well on the screen.

Just my $0.02. Thank you to the admins and web people who do much!

Hi all,

We have implemented a patch to resolve the issue we're seeing on iPhone mobile devices.  This is only a short term solution until we can figure out what is causing images to not load intermittently.  This patch is the cause of why it will take a second before the photos center themselves.

We also set a max height of 600px to make sure the images don't get too tall, large, or grainy.  Please check it out and let me know your feedback.

Thx

Seeing something interesting this morning when uploading pics. The blue Nightshift logo watermark of ginormous. Here is a screen grab.

ad located here. One image not uploaded today does show the watermark error - everything uploaded today has this same weirdness

Thanks for the heads up Amy.  We've fixed that.  Please upload your image again by editing your listing and it should upload correctly.

I achieve the same result by opening the ad in a new tab. That makes it easy to flip back and forth between ads.

And I notice that many of the ad pics are distorted. Making providers look very, um, "disproportionate". I think some providers might not be very happy with that. It's certainly something that shouldn't happen on an ad site.

I'm still sticking with the classic version for now. I tend to lose my place with the beta version.
